Tata Steel Nederland joins LESS aisbl: Marking a Major Milestone in the Europeanisation of the Low Emission Steel Standard
by Marvin Bender
Brussels, 11th June 2025 – LESS aisbl, the association operating the Low Emission Steel Standard (LESS), is proud to announce that Tata Steel Nederland, one of Europe’s leading steel producers with an annual crude steel production up to 7 million tonnes, has joined as a full member. This significant development brings LESS to a new level of representation, with almost one third of European steel production now participating in the association.
The addition of Tata Steel Nederland marks a crucial step in LESS’s mission to support the decarbonisation of the EU steel industry by providing a robust, reliable standard for low-emission steel.
Dr. Martin Theuringer, Secretary General of LESS aisbl, comments:
“We are delighted to welcome Tata Steel Nederland to LESS aisbl. Their membership is a testament to the growing momentum behind our standard and our vision for a decarbonised European steel industry. With Tata Steel Nederland on board, LESS now represents nearly a third of Europe’s steel production, underscoring our position as the leading platform for credible, transparent, and harmonised verification of low-emission steel.”
Hans van den Berg, CEO of Tata Steel Nederland, states:
“Joining LESS is a logical step for Tata Steel Nederland to accelerate our decarbonisation journey and to contribute to the transformation of the European steel sector. We fully support LESS’s objectives and are committed to advance reliable standards that will help customers, policymakers, and the entire value chain to build trust in more sustainable steel products. Together, we can make a real impact on the path to net zero.”
