Press Release: Website for the Low Emission Steel Standard (LESS) Now Live
by Yannik Sparrer
Brussels, 28th February 2025 – The Low Emission Steel Standard (LESS) has officially launched its dedicated website, providing a comprehensive overview of the standard and its role in transforming the steel industry. This new platform aims to engage steel producers, customers, policymakers, and all stakeholders committed to a low-carbon future.
LESS is a standard and label for low-emission steel, offering a transparent and uniform framework to assess CO₂ intensity. It helps steel-processing companies and EU Member States implement effectively their climate strategies and serves as a foundation for lead and pioneer markets, which have been under discussion in Germany and are now being explored as part of the Clean Industrial Deal.
Developed in Germany, LESS is now being rolled out across Europe. In October 2024, 21 founding members established LESS aisbl (association internationale sans but lucratif), a non-profit organisation based in Brussels, responsible for managing, evolving and ensuring the credibility of the standard.
LESS aisbl invites steel-producing companies to become members and/or certify their steel products against LESS through independent, third-party certification bodies. The certification system is currently under development, with the first LESS certificates expected to be available in summer 2025.
"LESS provides a clear and verifiable label for low-emission steel, filling a crucial gap on the path to CO₂-reduced steel. Following the successful launch of the standard and the founding of the organisation last year, we are now creating a central hub for everyone who wants to use LESS to document their progress toward near-zero steel," says Dr. Martin Theuringer, Secretary General of LESS aisbl.
The new website is now available at www.lowemissionsteelstandard.org.
