Deja vu at the Hannover Messe: One year of LESS

by Marvin Bender

Hanover, 31st March 2025 - Almost a year ago, we introduced the Low Emission Steel Standard (LESS) at the Hannover Fair together with the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). Today, one year later, we can look back on its process with pride.

To mark the occasion, we returned today to reflect the first year together with the BMWK, TÜV Nord, and DNV. The outcome has been extremely positive: the association (LESS aisbl) has been formally established and is now set to be rolled out across Europe. The development of the certification system has made significant progress, with its credibility reinforced by the successful completion of multiple test phases.

LESS represents a major milestone for the industry, serving as a label for the classification of low-emission steel. It provides a needed foundation for the establishment of lead markets in Germany and Europe – markets that will be essential in making low-emission basic materials the new norm in the long run.

Now, it’s more important than ever for both policymakers and businesses to take concrete action to push this transition forward. LESS aisbl welcomes all companies that want to take an active role in this change. All steel producers are invited to become members of LESS or have their products certified-positioning themselves as pioneers in a market that will shape the future of the industry.
